National Mileage Register

You have received a letter from us because one or more vehicles you may have owned requires its mileage history to be confirmed before a company within the motor trade can buy or sell it. Under a special agreement, the DVLA provided us with the address of everyone who has registered this vehicle, which is why you have received a letter.

We only need approximate information and there is a "don't know" option so please don’t worry if you can't remember everything about the vehicle.

If you have been sent more than one vehicle registration and reference number you will need to complete this process for each one separately.

Vehicle registration is invalid.
You must enter the correct ten digit reference number from your letter to proceed. It starts with '18'.

Built to protect car buyers from clocking and mileage fraud, the NMR brings together vehicle mileages from sources such as the DVLA, V5 documents and vehicle leasing companies. By responding to an NMR letter you're helping to protect future car buyers like yourself.

The NMR operates for the purposes of preventing fraud across the motor trade, following legislation set out under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations Act 2008.

Frequently asked questions about the National Mileage Register.

A company within the motor trade will have taken in, or are about to take in, a vehicle which you have previously been a registered keeper of. Dealers are at risk of prosecution under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading regulations of 2008 if they have not taken all reasonable precautions to ensure that the mileage of any used vehicle they sell is accurate. We act on behalf of our customers, requesting information from the previous keepers of the vehicle in an attempt to verify the mileage shown. This check helps to protect both the purchaser and the retailer of the vehicle.

The vehicle we have written to you about has not been singled out because we think there may be a problem and there is no suggestion that this vehicle, or you as one of its recorded keepers, is in any way under suspicion of falsifying the vehicle's mileage. The vehicle we are investigating is likely to have been offered to a dealer for sale or part exchange and they are performing a routine check on the vehicle's mileage reading.

CAP HPI Ltd holds an agreement with the DVLA to request previous keeper details of a vehicle which is undergoing a mileage investigation for the purpose of verifying whether a vehicle's mileage is accurate. CAP HPI Ltd will only ever use your details in relation to this mileage investigation and this information is not passed on to the company in the motor trade who requested this mileage investigation or to any other third party. Further information on the use of DVLA keeper data can be found in this PDF document.

Once you have provided the mileage details for this particular vehicle we will not contact you again should another mileage investigation be requested on the vehicle at a later date. If an investigation is requested on a separate vehicle that you have previously been the registered keeper of, we may contact you requesting mileage information for this vehicle.

If you still own this vehicle, a mileage investigation may have been raised by a company within the motor trade if you have been looking into selling or part exchanging your vehicle. Please complete the online form and complete the question relating to your ownership of the vehicle. This should take you no more than 2 minutes. We will then be able to update our records to show you still own the vehicle and will help us to complete our investigation into this vehicle's mileage.

If you have never owned this vehicle, please complete the online form and complete the question relating to the ownership of the vehicle. This should take you no more than 2 minutes, and will help us to complete our investigation into this vehicle's mileage. Your details have been provided to us either by the DVLA or from the company requesting the mileage investigation on the vehicle having taken them from the V5 registration document. You may want to write to the DVLA to ask for proof that you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle. You should provide as much information about the vehicle as possible. The DVLA will update their records and send a letter of confirmation to you within 4 weeks.

If the keeper (or previous keeper) of the vehicle is now deceased, please accept our apologies for any distress our communication may have caused. Unfortunately, when we receive keeper details from the DVLA, we have no way of identifying that the previous keeper may be deceased. We would greatly appreciate 2 minutes of your time to complete the question relating to the ownership of the vehicle on the online form. This should take you no more than 2 minutes, and will help us to complete our investigation into this vehicle's mileage.
